
Nearly every plant tag you have ever read says the same four words: prefers moist, well-drained soil. Almost nobody checks whether their bed actually is well-drained — and that unchecked assumption kills more shrubs and vegetables than any pest ever will. Finding out takes one hole, one bucket of water, and about fifteen minutes of your attention this evening.
Why drainage quietly outranks almost everything else
Water moves down through soil via pore space — the gaps between particles of sand, silt, and clay. Sand particles are largest and leave the most room; clay particles the smallest. Iowa State University Extension puts the mechanism plainly: when soil holds water for long stretches, that excess water displaces the oxygen in those pores, and low soil oxygen damages root health directly.
Compaction makes it worse, and compaction is everywhere — construction traffic, the shortcut you walk across the bed every day, tilling so often that soil aggregates break down. And here is the part that catches people out: a sloped site is not automatically well-drained. Heavy clay or a hardpan layer underneath holds water on a slope just as stubbornly as it does in a low corner.
The perk test: dig it tonight, read it tomorrow
A percolation test — “perk test” to most gardeners — is the only reliable way to know your number, and the evening is the perfect time to start one because the long soaking step runs overnight while you do nothing at all.
- Dig a hole at least 12 inches deep and 4 to 12 inches wide — 18 inches if your plants have rootballs taller than a foot. Already digging a planting hole? Use that one.
- Skip it if the soil is soggy. Working wet soil glazes the sides of the hole, sealing them and giving a falsely slow reading. Wait for a dry stretch.
- Fill the hole with water and let it drain completely. This is the saturation step, and it can take anywhere from a few minutes to an entire day. Start it in the evening and it takes care of itself.
- Refill immediately once that first fill has drained, and measure the water depth with a ruler.
- Wait 15 minutes, measure the drop in inches, and multiply by four. That is your drainage rate in inches per hour.
Two inches of drop in fifteen minutes means eight inches an hour. A quarter inch means one inch an hour.
What your number actually means
The thresholds come straight from extension horticulture guidance, and they are refreshingly uncomplicated.
1 to 3 inches per hour is the sweet spot — desirable for most plants. Land here and you can plant whatever you like.
Less than 1 inch per hour is poor drainage. Roots in that bed will spend real stretches of the season in oxygen-starved soil. Two honest options: improve the bed, or choose plants that genuinely tolerate wet feet, like buttonbush, redosier dogwood, or rose mallow.
More than 4 inches per hour is very sharply drained soil. Nothing suffocates here, but water and nutrients run past the root zone faster than plants can use them. It is the in-ground version of the problem where water runs straight through a pot without ever wetting the mix.

Fixing a bed that drains too slowly
Reach for compost, not sand. Adding sand to clay is one of the most persistent pieces of bad garden advice going; organic matter is what rebuilds structure. Compost encourages soil particles to clump into aggregates, and the spaces between those aggregates become the new pore space that holds and exchanges air and water.
The working numbers: spread compost 2 to 4 inches thick across the surface and incorporate it into the top 6 to 12 inches with a shovel or garden fork. Do not over-till — running a rototiller too often smashes the very aggregates you are building. Then protect the result: stay off the bed, never work it wet, and keep the surface covered, which is where a proper layer of mulch on your garden beds earns its keep.
If the bed is hopeless — a genuine hardpan, or a low spot collecting every downspout in the yard — stop fighting it. Build a raised bed sized to contain the full root system of whatever you are growing, or redirect the water into a rain garden planted for those conditions. Both work, and neither requires you to win an argument with your subsoil.
