
Stand at the end of your kitchen counter and sight down the run of cabinet doors. If one hangs a few millimeters lower than its neighbor, or the gap between a pair of doors is wide at the top and pinched at the bottom, nothing is broken — the hinges have simply drifted out of adjustment. That is a twenty-minute correction with a single screwdriver, and it does not require removing a door, buying a part, or touching the cabinet box.
First, identify the hinge you’re working with
Open a door and look at the hardware. If you see a cup-shaped barrel seated in a round recess in the back of the door, connected by an arm to a plate screwed to the cabinet’s side wall, you have a concealed hinge — commonly called a European hinge. The bore is a 35 mm standard across the major manufacturers (Blum, Grass, Salice, Hettich), which is why replacement hinges from different brands generally drop into the same hole.
Concealed hinges are the ones worth adjusting, because they were designed to be adjusted. If instead you see a butt hinge or a wrap-around hinge mounted on a wooden face frame, your options are narrower: loosen the mounting screws, reposition the door by hand, re-tighten.
The three screws and what each one actually moves
A concealed hinge gives you three independent axes, and confusing them is why people fiddle for an hour and make things worse.
- Side-to-side (lateral). The screw nearest the door, usually at the front of the hinge arm. This swings the door left or right and is the one that fixes uneven gaps between a pair of doors. Expect roughly 2 mm of travel each way.
- Depth (in and out). The rear screw on the arm, often a cam. This pulls the door tight to the cabinet or pushes it proud, which is what you use when one door sits forward of its neighbor.
- Height (up and down). Not on the hinge arm at all — it’s on the mounting plate screwed to the cabinet wall. Loosen both plate screws slightly, slide the door up or down, then re-tighten.
Nearly all of these take a #2 Phillips driver. Turn in quarter-turn increments and close the door to check after each one; the movement is small and cumulative, and overshooting is the main way this job goes long.
A working order of operations
Adjust in this sequence and you’ll converge quickly instead of chasing yourself in circles:
- Height first. Get the door’s top edge level with its neighbors. Everything else is easier once the doors line up horizontally.
- Then side-to-side. Even out the vertical gap between adjacent doors. A standard reveal is about 1/8 inch — and a credit card, which is 0.76 mm thick by the ISO card standard, makes a serviceable feeler gauge for checking that the gap is consistent top to bottom.
- Depth last. Bring the door faces flush so the run reads as one plane when you sight down it.
- Tighten the mounting screws and open and close the door five or six times. Hinges settle; re-check the gap afterward.

When the hinge isn’t the problem
Sometimes you’ll run out of adjustment before the door looks right, and that means something structural has moved. The most common cause is a stripped screw hole: cabinet side panels are often particleboard, and a hinge plate screw that has been overtightened will spin without biting. The standard repair is to back the screw out, work a little wood glue and two or three wooden toothpicks into the hole, snap them flush, let the glue cure, and drive the screw back in — the fresh wood gives the threads something to hold.
The other possibility is a warped door — flush at the hinge side, twisting away at the handle. Solid-wood doors near a dishwasher or a range are the usual candidates, because repeated humidity cycling is what moves them, and adjustment won’t correct a twist. Everything short of those two cases is genuinely a screwdriver problem.
