
The worst possible time to go looking for your water shutoff is while water is already spreading across the floor. Thirty minutes is enough to walk the house, find every valve, confirm each one turns, and label it — and you only have to do it once.
Start at the main, and know which kind you have
The main shutoff sits where the supply line enters the building, almost always within a few feet of the water meter — the basement or utility room in cold climates, a garage, crawlspace, or exterior box near the sidewalk in warmer ones.

Older multi-turn stops with oval handles sometimes weep from the packing nut once disturbed; snug that nut an eighth of a turn and it usually stops. The drain valve at the base is for flushing sediment, not for emergencies.
Outdoor spigots are the other blind spot. A frost-free sillcock closes well inside the heated wall, and many are fed by their own interior stop on the branch line. A small bleeder cap on the side of the hose bibb is a strong hint that interior shutoff exists — go find it. Irrigation systems add a backflow assembly with two more valves.
